You may remember a few months ago, in one of my previous posts, I shared that my partner and I had bought our very first house together! After renting various houses for over five years, we are so excited to finally own the perfect family home and be able to put our own stamp on it over the coming years.
We are currently waiting for it to be built and we’re now finally seeing progress, after months of waiting! Although we have so many decisions to make, regarding finishing touches and optional extras – which is all so exciting! We recently chose our kitchen & tiles and we’re now currently trying to decide on flooring throughout our home and whether to go for carpet or laminate flooring.
In our previous homes, we have always had carpet (apart from the kitchens and bathrooms, of course). However, we like the idea of laminate throughout downstairs, as it’s more durable since it’s a high traffic area of the home, yet it stills looks modern and up-to-date. I think it would be ideal in the hallway, as it would be a lot easier to clean up any mess from pushchairs or muddy shoes and in the kitchen, mopping up any spillages (which are a fairly common occurrence when you have children!). Laminate is also softer and warmer than tiles or stone, which is more child-friendly. I like how versatile it is, as it would work well in any room, even in a new-build house.
After browsing online, I’ve found there are so many different styles of laminate to choose from, with a variety of colours, finishes and thickness – there is bound to be one to suit your taste and suitable for your needs. It’s also really affordable, which is ideal for us in our current situation. As you will probably know, moving house is very expensive; with legal fees, mortgage payments, bills, the cost of new furniture and decor etc. mounting up – we need to keep costs down in certain areas. It’s very easy to install too, so I’m sure my partner would easily be able to fit it, again saving us some money. It’s also scratch resistant, so I know any future pets (once we’ve settled in!) won’t damage the flooring either.
We’re so used to carpet, but there are so many positives to laminate flooring – we are certainly considering it.

I've always lived in homes with carpet & tile, and my tastes are a little different. I definitely prefer hardwood flooring/laminate to carpet, and I feel like what's so great about it is that you can always buy a gorgeous rug if you want a change!
